Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970 Gran Consul

Joya de Nicaragua Antaino 1970 Gran Consul

I came to this cigar through standard means of purchasing a 5 pack from Famous Smoke. I have had my eye on purchasing this cigar, along with many Joya de Nicaragua cigars, since I tend to believe that Nicaragua produces some of the best cigars in the world and what could be better than to by a brand that translates directly into english, the joy of Nicaragua?

This particular smoke is a Nicaraguan puro wrapped by a criollo leaf. This specific line is offered in multiple sizes, one of which is sure to be the right size for you because they range from Churchills to this small gem, the Gran Consul. If you have not noticed by my reviews at this point, I tend to pick smaller sized violas because time is short when living in the fast lane.

The prices of these vitolas vary wildly based on their size and run from about $6 USD per stick and up to almost $9 USD per stick for the larger sizes. Neither of these seem unreasonable compared to other offerings on the market.

Joya de Nicaragua Antaino 1970 Gran Consul Review

The Smoke: The Joya de Nicaragua 1970 Gran Consul is a well made cigar. You can fell how solid it is in your hand. When squeezed near the foot it has an ample amount of give but quickly regains its form when released. Closer to the head, the cigar has no give what so ever under similar loading. The Criollo leaf is oily and has a nice milk chocolate hue, some veiny-ness, and a little toothy-ness. The cap was removed easily by my Palio straight cutter.

The cold draw was good. Unlit, the cigar had solid cedar and leather notes. Leather and some spice are found in the flavor profile once lit. After the initial burn some caramel joins and last until the end of the smoke. The body of this is full and the nicotine punches quite a pack, this is not for the faint of heart or the weak.

The construction of the cigar maintains well while the burn rate is mostly even, or even enough to remain enjoyable that is.  The draw also remains very good from beginning to end.

To sum up the Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970 Gran Consul, this is a powerhouse cigar that is full of flavor and body. It is well made and certainly worth the price of admission. After smoking the first of the 5-pack, I wish I had a box; but, frankly, I have no room for a box at this moment. Once I do, I am adding this to the list of boxes to seek.

The Score: Buy a Box of 20
