HVC Vieja Cosecha NO.2

HVC Vieja Cosecha NO.2

The Cosecha number 2 is the follow-up to the wildly popular and rare Cosecha Number 1. Both Honduran assembled cigars feature tobacco that was grown and then aged for over 5 years from Nicaraguan based Aganorsa.  The number 1 was only offered in a Toro vitola while the number 2 is only offered in a slightly larger Figurado shape. Both offerings were limited releases of 200 boxes of 20 cigars each. I came about this sample from a monthly cigar subscription about 5 months ago.

Wrapper: Nicaragua
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Length:  6 1/2"
Ring Gauge: 56
Size: Figurado

The Smoke: I am not going to lie; I was psyched out of my mind for this smoke. I have generally come to the conclusion that aged Nicaraguan tobaccos are world class and rival (if not are better) than many of the smokes that come from Cuba. For this reason, I delayed writing the review because I felt that I needed to digest this one a bit before putting pen to paper.

The Figurado shape is ideal for a straight cut which was achieved using my Xikar Xi2 cutter.  The cold draw as a bit tight, which should be expected given the shape of the cigar. The unlit flavor was very cedar centric with some notes of earth and hay.  The cigar feels well-constructed in the hand. The Nicaraguan Criollo 98 wrapper displays a nice medium brown color. When squeezed, the cigar returns to its previous form.

HVC Vieja Cosecha NO.2 Review

After lighting the cigar and taking the first few puffs I was a bit confused. The smoke seemed harsh and was unpleasant. I chalked it up to the narrow opening at the foot due to the shape and tried my best to not cloud my thoughts. As the smoke progressed into the full girth of the cigar the harshness remained until about the quarter point. From there, the cigar massively improved. The cedar wood centric flavor returned but was sprinkled with some espresso and cocoa. Pepper arrives at about the mid-point and stays until the end.

The construction of the cigar remains tight with a mostly even burn rate. The draw is good once the cherry of the cigar reaches the outer portion of the narrow Figurado passage. The total time to smoke from beginning to end was about 2 hours.

To sum up my thoughts, I think this is a decent cigar. I was a bit miffed by the harshness to start. Frankly, I thought about putting in down and lighting up something else, but I am glad I maintained my resolve. This turned out to be an enjoyable smoke once the harshness died down.

The Score: Buy a 5 Pack
