Joya de Nicaragua Black Double Robusto

Joya de Nicaragua Black Review

I am not going to go into some deep existential dive for this review. The Joya de Nicaragua Black is one of their main offerings along the lines of Joya's Red and Silver lines. The Joya Black cigars feature Nicaraguan long-filler tabacco and are wrapped by a Mexican San Andres leaf. These cigars are common and can be found in five different vitolas including cigarillos.
The Joya black cost about $6 USD per stick which almost puts it into the daily smoker price range.

Wrapper: Mexico
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Length5"
Ring Gauge: 56
Size: Double Robusto

The Smoke: The Double Robusto size is perfect for me; it is the same length as most traditional Robusto cigars but has a slightly larger ring gauge to pack in more tabacco. The San Andres wrapper displays a chocolate like hue and is oily. The cigar feels like it is well made and gives a little when it is squeezed. I cut the cigar using my Xikar V2 cutter. The cut allowed the cigar to have a nice cold draw. The cold draw brought notes of leather and cedar.

Once burning, the cigar lost some of the leather note as that faded into the background. The first half of the stick featured chocolate and espresso flavor notes along with mild spice. Nut joined at about the 1/3 mark and cedar joined about mid-stick. Both late joining flavors complemented the previously established notes. The cigar also has slight sweetness that stays from beginning to end. All of the flavors begin to diminish at the half way mark. None of them go away but they do become less pronounced. The profile of the cigar is medium to full strength.

The burn rate is excellent and remains very straight during the life of the smoke. The draw of the smoke is also very good and changes very little. The cigar remains intact and requires very little ashing during the life of the smoke. I probably could have pushed this cigar to only being ashed once, but I wound up ashing it twice during the hour and half long smoking session.

Joya de Nicaragua Black Review

I found this cigar enjoyable and I find the price point very attractive. It is a well made cigar that provides decent flavor for the price. The flavors start strong but do slowly diminish over time. While it is far from a perfect cigar, I could see me breaking it out at a lounge for a cheaper smoking session.

The Score: Buy a 5 Pack
